Radon system installation is a significant and very important addition in any house. Radon is a very dangerous colorless, odorless gas that is formed due to the decomposition of radioactive elements such as Uranium and Radium. Since these radioactive elements are located underneath the surface of the earth, in rocks and mountains and in water bodies therefore naturally the existence of radon is the most common in these locations. Experts also blame the lack of radon system installation in this regard.
The breakdown of radon itself contributes to the stable amount of radon in the atmosphere. Yet, the naturally occurring amount of radon is harmless. It becomes a danger if there is a continuous increase in its concentration and the amount exceeds 4 picocuries per liter in the surrounding air.The most common cause of radon poisoning in the air is the accumulation of this poisoned air inside buildings due to lack of ventilation and crossing of air.
The procedure for a radon system installation is simple:
- Installation of PVC pipe:
The focus of this technique is to ensure ventilation in the house and to suction the radon out of the house. The first step in this regard is to hire professional help to locate the area of the house where the highest concentration of radon is present. It is preferred that the radon system installation is performed there. Once the location has been agreed upon a hole of 20-meter diameter is drilled there.
- Installation of the vent:
After the hole has been drilled the next step is to install the vent. The vent comprises of the PVC pipe installed previously. Small holes are drilled in the PVC pipe prior to installation to ensure airflow and suction radon containing air from all parts of the house successfully. After the pipe has been installed equipment called the vent is installed that serves as a suction component. It performs two functions. The first job is to suck out the radon poisoned air and the second job it does is to replace the air with fresh air.
- Sealing the vent holes:
Once the PVC pipe and the vent have been installed successfully the holes that were drilled in the pipe before installation are filled and sealed properly. The material which is used for the filling is called hydraulic cement and a black backer rod is placed around the base of the PVC pipe. The pipe is then extended from the rooftop.
- Venting of Radon:
After the equipment has been installed properly the pipe is extended and drawn from above the rooftop and is attached to the fan. The fan when turned on starts the ventilation process and draws the contaminated air and allows fresh air to go in. The installation of the PVC pipe also ensures even distribution of fresh air in the house.
After the installation of the system is complete only proper maintenance and upkeep is required to keep it functioning properly and efficiently.
